Grampians Region Midwifery Programs

The Grampians Region Maternity Project Team member are working on programs to improve access for all midwives to education and skill development.  The pilot programs in 2010 are now undergoing review and redevelopment for 2011.

The Regional Midwife Program offers short term placements for midwives from the Grampians region in to provide the opportunity to utilise a wider range of midwifery skills with a more complex mix of patients.  Midwives are able to gain valuable exprience and retain midwifery skills that they do not have the opportunity to utilise in their own workplace.  There are both paid and unpaid models available depending on the type of experience needed. The 2010 program is currently at capacity.

In 2011 we will have a set number of places in the program and will ask for expressions of interest late in 2010.  It will be a case management model where the participants will set their own objectives and learning needs.  Access to both paid and unpaid placement will be provided at Ballarat Health Services in addition to utilising study days and other programs according to individual needs. Watch this site for further information from October onwards.

The Regional Midwifery Study Day and Networking Program is being developed for 2011 in partership with the Regional Midwife Program.  Networking and study days will be arranged according to the needs of the region to develop partnerships within the specialities of midwifery to pool resources and share ideas.  We will utilise the current videoconferencing facilities in the region for ease of access and on-line learning tools.

On-line Learning Packages are being developed for the midwifery workforce in the region and the intention is to roll this concept out in 2011. Topics include Neonatal Resuscitation, Newborn Jaundice and Breastfeeding and the Late Preterm Infant.
